In this great new video, members get to watch Billie Richardson and her 13-month-old Australian Shepherd, Rush, as she sets up a confidence-building work. There are many different training elements shown in this video and discussion on:

  • Taking time to set up the work and let the dog and stock settle.
  • Letting the dog find comfort in the work.
  • Teaching the dog to understand the pressure of the livestock.
  • Being a good boss.
  • Building trust and respect.
  • Approaching the work with a firm but fair mindset.
  • Allowing room to succeed.
  • Teaching the dog to come into pressure.
  • Matching the flank with the task.
  • Enthusiasm having greater value than perfection.
  • …and much more!

Billie Richardson has been a mechanical engineering consultant for the past 28 years in Calgary, Canada. While Billie never grew up on a farm, she remembers being amazed after watching the Calgary Stampede World Stockdog Championship many years ago and how they could get a 2 year old dog to maneuver around with whistles! She now has a small farm outside of Okotoks, raising sheep, goats and, in her words, "a few useless chickens".
