Billie Richardson she works her young Australian Shepherd, Frankie, in the field. Working loose eyed breeds comes with its own nuances and Billie shows us how she continues to develop the dog’s skills on stock, explaining:

  • Why you need to praise the dog for looking for stock.
  • What she is looking for with this dog on the fetch.
  • Why in some cases she will ask for the walk up rather than a flank.
  • How she keeps the dog freed up regardless of the draw of the sheep.
  • How to push on the shoulder to open a flank.
  • How to get the sheep to trust the dog and the handler.
  • The importance for her to keep the dog happy.
  • Why remembering to preserve the try is key.
  • Being careful when you start to stretch a dog’s outruns that you don’t become too critical at first,
  • …and much more!

Billie Richardson has been a mechanical engineering consultant for the past 28 years in Calgary, Canada. While Billie never grew up on a farm, she remembers being amazed after watching the Calgary Stampede World Stockdog Championship many years ago and how they could get a 2 year old dog to maneuver around with whistles! She now has a small farm outside of Okotoks, raising sheep, goats and, in her words, "a few useless chickens".
