Lots of trainers can teach a dog to move stock but can you get the stock to move at the speed you want? This is an important skill and in this outstanding video, Haley Hunewill explains one of the drills she uses to teach this young dog how to change the stock’s speed. Haley explains this isn’t an easy thing to get right and many dogs will struggle because they need pace, clean flanks and a good stop. This video shows you how:
- A young dog needs to stop first to keep better flanks.
- Ideally the dog should always be slightly moving forward.
- It’s bad for your flow if you are constantly re-establishing the bubble of movement.
- By changing the walk-up whistle she builds to a trot or easy lope.
- For faster speeds, two changes are made. The steady whistle is changed to a walk up and the flanks are asked for on the go rather than after a stop.
- It is best to finish the drill at the slow pace to keep the flanks clean.
- And much more!
