Dog Training Online is proud to welcome Australian Shepherd trainer Billie Richardson. Billie has competed with her dogs at the highest level. In this video she shows us what these Australian Shepherds are capable of and teaches how she:

  • Walks to the post with intent to feel the different pressures presented on the field.
  • Gives the dog time to read the field and watches where it is looking.
  • Changes from whistles to voice as the stock gets close.
  • Likes to develop the little flanks.
  • Steps into the dog to develop the keep off.
  • Looks for the stock to keep developing trust and respect.
  • Backs up to tell the dog it has found the correct position.
  • Identifies what the correct trajectory of the flank should be.
  • Likes the dogs to think.
  • and more!

Billie Richardson has been a mechanical engineering consultant for the past 28 years in Calgary, Canada. While Billie never grew up on a farm, she remembers being amazed after watching the Calgary Stampede World Stockdog Championship many years ago and how they could get a 2 year old dog to maneuver around with whistles! She now has a small farm outside of Okotoks, raising sheep, goats and, in her words, "a few useless chickens".
